The Weston wheelchair mounted assistive robot - the design story

Robotic technology can be used in several ways to benefit people with disabilities. This paper describes the mounting of a robotic arm to a powered wheelchair to assist disabled users in daily activities. Although there are many potential benefits for the disabled user, there are also very strong requirements and compromises, which must be considered in integrating the robotic arm with the whee...

Simplifying Wheelchair Mounted Robotic Arm Control with a Visual Interface

Wheelchair mounted robotic arms can assist people that have severe physical handicaps with activities of daily life. Manufacturer-provided direct input devices may not correlate well to the user’s motor skills and may require a high level of cognitive awareness. Our goal is to provide methods for independent manipulation of objects in unstructured environments utilizing a wheelchair mounted rob...

A Real-Time Technique for Positioning a Wheelchair-Mounted Robotic Arm for Household Manipulation Tasks

Wheelchair mounted robotic arms can help people with disabilities perform their activities of daily living (ADL). The autonomy of such a system can range from full manual control (both wheelchair and robotic arm controlled by the human) to fully autonomous (with both the wheelchair and the robotic arm under autonomous control). Many ADLs require the robot to pick up an object from a cluttered e...

Autonomous Mobility & Manipulation of a 9-DoF WMRA

Two prototypes of a 9-DoF wheelchair-mounted robotic arm (WMRA) have been developed as assistive devices, consisting of a 7-DoF robotic arm and a 2-DoF power wheelchair. Combined kinematics and redundancy resolution have been previously implemented. In this work, we focus on control methods to allow autonomous mobility and manipulation for the execution of activities of daily living (ADL). Resu...

Visibility Optimization in Manipulation Tasks for a Wheelchair-Mounted Robot Arm

Assistive robot arms provide people with upper motor disabilities a way to independently complete daily activities [1]. Research into shared autonomy investigates how to augment user teleoperation of a robot arm with intelligent robotic assistance to make assistive robots easier to use [2]. However, during assistance, shared autonomy systems may move the robot into positions that occlude import...
